Program Description From the California Sierra Nevada Mountains to the Colorado River, Angelinos have been in search of fresh water resources since the early 1900’s. The Clean Water Program is sponsored by the LAUSD Science Branch, and is funded by a grant from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The program consists of a tour of the Terminal Island Sewage Treatment Plant, as well as a full day of lessons at the Center for Marine Studies, the Marine Mammal Care Center, and the Oiled Bird Center. It also includes hands-on sessions and activities at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and the Sea Education Afloat Boat trip. The focus of the Clean Water Program is the Los Angeles watershed, where water comes from, the journey it takes to get to the Los Angeles basin, what happens after we have used it, and the importance of water quality. For many students, this will be their first encounter with the ocean environment, giving them relevant knowledge about the natural world around them. The LAUSD Clean Water Program curriculum meets California Education Standards for students in the 8th and 10th grades, and will enhance your classroom activities. The Clean Water Program takes place at the Hostelling International (HI) Los Angeles South Bay hostel in San Pedro. This facility provides a relaxed, friendly, and clean environment with stunning views near the Korean Friendship Bell.
